Seson 8 Bout 3 I Toys For Tots charity drive
October 30 2012

The Arizona Derby Dames are returning to Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on November 10th for the third bout of their eighth season.

The upcoming bout will be a double-header, with the Runaway Brides taking on the Coffin Draggers followed by a battle between the Schoolyard Scrappers and the Bombshells.

While all four of the bouting teams are eager for another chance to compete, they are also looking forward to this bout as an opportunity to recognize the service of those who have defended this country.

Throughout the bout, the Arizona Derby Dames will be honoring all active military personnel as well as all veterans. In addition, there will be a toy drive supporting the Toys for Tots organization.

Lady Lawless, Captain of the Bombshells, is heading up the Toys for Tots donation. Lawless encourages fans to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the donation; in exchange, fans will receive five free raffle tickets. In addition, businesses, groups, and fans can get ten free tickets to the November bout by making a donation of just $100. Contact Lawless before November 6th at azddtft@gmail.com for more information.

The Runaway Brides are eager to face off against the Coffin Draggers, whose three-year winning streak was broken in the Arizona Derby Dames’ Season Opener in September. Blocker and pivot for the Coffin Draggers, Vicious Kitten, says: “I love playing the Brides; it’s always a fun game.”

After their recent win against the Coffin Draggers, the Bombshells are looking forward to playing the Schoolyard Scrappers. Both teams have been training hard to leave this bout victorious; the upcoming bout is sure to be emotionally-charged.

Several of the women who skate with the Arizona Derby Dames serve or have served this nation in various branches of the military. Strawberry Smashcake, blocker and pivot for the Runaway Brides, served in the United States Air Force until very recently making the decision not to reenlist.

“I have met amazing people in the Air Force,” says Smash. “I have had the pleasure of having unreal moments all over the world.”

Emotional about leaving the Air Force, Smash adds: “I will still be living the American dream, just not in combat boots.”

Vicious Kitten served in the United States Army for four years with the 551st Transportation Battalion. “I’m proud to be a veteran,” says Kitten, adding: “I hope all our troops make it home from their overseas duty safe and healthy.”

“I still get goose-bumps when the National Anthem plays,” says Smash.

Like Smash, Kitten finds it heartwarming when she is recognized for her service, stating: “It lets you know that you are appreciated.”

The Arizona Derby Dames are extremely grateful for the liberties and freedom granted by the sacrifice of those who have served in the United States military. The November bout is an opportunity to celebrate this nation’s service men and women, to support a great cause for the upcoming holiday season, and to have a lot of fun. Fans can expect the same exciting competition that is consistently delivered by Arizona’s largest banked track league; come prepared for loads of hard-hitting roller derby action.
